Así es como Víctor Corina Mamani ha transformado su vida y la de su familia en Los Yungas: un viaje desde los desafíos hacia un futuro lleno de esperanza y oportunidades.
Victor Corina Mamani was born in Los Yungas. His parents moved from the Altiplano to Los Yungas in La Paz. They arrived in the region in 1990, hoping to find better opportunities. From the beginning, Victor and his family dedicated themselves to coffee production, a pursuit that allowed them to dream of a prosperous future.
However, fate presented challenges. Over time, coffee prices fell dramatically on the market, while coca leaf began to offer better economic returns.
Faced with this reality, the Corina family was forced to dedicate themselves to coca production, seeking to ensure their livelihood and family survival.
However, the market cycle is unpredictable. When coffee prices began recovering, Victor and his family resumed coffee farming. This change was difficult; adapting to producing a new crop required learning and abandoning old habits.
Victor had grown up growing coca and was unfamiliar with the demands of coffee. However, support arrived at the right time. Through the UNODC project in La Asunta, Victor and other local producers were trained by experts from abroad.
They learned about organic coffee management, how to protect it from pests and diseases and how to optimize its production.
Thanks to this valuable knowledge, Victor experienced a positive change in his life. "Before, as inexperienced producers, we faced many obstacles; now we are better equipped to grow coffee."
"The family's finances improved considerably by diversifying our crops and opting for more sustainable alternative coffee cultivation that has brought not only economic advantages; but moreover, a deeper connection with nature," he says.
Victor knows there is still much to learn. He expects that UNODC will continue to support him with more training to further develop his skills in coffee production.
His dream is to continue improving his growing coffee business, which will benefit his family economically and support his community.
This is how Victor Corina Mamani has transformed not only his life; but also, his family in Los Yungas: a journey from challenges to a future full of hope and opportunities.
